What's Not To Like?

Someone asked me the other day, “What is the best part of RVing?” The question sort of surprised me and before I could think of a snappy answer I replied “I like everything about it.” I’ve been mulling the question and my answer for a few days and have realized that I DO like everything about the RV experience. I don’t necessarily like every aspect equally, but there is nothing about it so far that I dislike.

Sure, putting on tight rubber gloves to wrestle with an uncooperative sewer hose is not high on my list of likes, but it only needs doing occasionally and its like any other life chore. Do it, do it right, and then move on.

What is high on my list is the sense of adventure, the exploring of new territory or landscapes, the meeting new friends, seeing the wonders of nature. I especially like learning about this land I live in and about how we fit into the picture. For instance, the other day we were at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. They have an outstanding visitor’s center there. The building has fairly new and the architecture fits into the landscape. The parks service has many exhibits that explain about the unique bio-system of the dunes plus the nearby mountains and wetlands. Yes, I said wetlands. There are the super dry, desert like sand dunes and right next door are wetlands and lakes. I did say unique didn’t I?

I watched the better part of a continuously running movie about the dunes. It explained how they came about, how they continuously refreshed, and how they affect and support countless living creatures. It was truly fascinating, and I had no idea that this relatively small and rare nature system existed at all. That trip to the visitor’s center may turn out to be the highlight of this trip. And it was so unexpected, but that is what traveling is all about – you never know what is around the next bend in the road. And having a RV makes that traveling easier.

I also like the camaraderie. Last night we sat outside around a fire with friends until well after dark. We ate fresh grilled hamburgers, drank some excellent Pinot Noir and had a lot of fun just talking. That connection you establish with other people, the common connection of traveling around the country with your home strapped to your back (figuratively) is pretty cool. The variety of people enjoying the traveling lifestyle seems endless. Yea, I pretty much like everything about RVing.
