Travel Day

Yesterday was a travel day. We moved from Durango to Santa Rosa, N.M. From the mountains to the desert plains. Even though it had only been two weeks, I had forgotten how flat the New Mexican desert is. The sand goes on forever. Occasional ridges, buttes, peaks and other features dot the horizon, but the road knifes through the land straight ahead as far as you can see. Kinda neat and boring at the same time.

We had a great time in Durango. The last couple of nights were downright cold and there was frost on the truck yesterday morning when I set out to get hitched up. My truck doors were frozen shut. And many of the leaves that had been on the trees when we arrived were now on the ground. Winter is just around the corner. I got a propane tank topped off and we went to Walmart to get some food the day before. So we were ready to secure the trailer and head south.

We have a series of departure checklists that we (mostly) consult when preparing to travel. They remind us to do things such as secure all the drawers, close vents, pack away the breakables, etc. We got the lists from Chad and Tara of the Changing Lanes YouTube channel. An excellent start.

We have been modifying and customizing the lists over the past year. We also recently learned a serious lesson regarding our check lists. We failed to latch our refrigerator doors and upon arrival at our last stop found the fridge hanging open and some food all over the kitchen floor. You can bet that we will be paying closer attention to those lists going forward.

And we are getting better at getting ready, hooking up and setting out on a travel day. The cats of course don’t like it as they get put into their carriers and then have to wait until we are actually underway before they can come out and crawl all over the inside of the truck. We have a portable cat box for them (that they thankfully use) and lots of places to perch, hide, sleep or just look out a window. Yesterday’s travel day was pretty much uneventful which is how I like them.

Today Vicky is working so I will head on over to the Santa Rosa Route 66 Classic Car Auto Museum (say that five times fast) and maybe to a store to pick up a few things that we forgot. Gotta have sour cream. My much ballyhooed cellular router setup is once again working. Despite their coverage map which shows that T-Mobile has great 5G signals all over Durango, we were in a valley that had no T-Mobile signal at all and the AT&T signal was iffy. But now we are back to having a great connection with plenty of data capability. Yeah!

We head east tomorrow to Amarillo and then to Wichita Falls for two days. From there we move to Athens, Texas where we will stay put for a week. I will be attending classes in the Big Red Schoolhouse there, learning how to repair Recreational Vehicles and getting my National Recreational Vehicle Training Academy registration. Then we head home to Austin the last weekend of October.
