Thoughts on Renting a RV

Updated: Oct 21, 2019

The Crossroads Cruiser 305RS that we have rented from the Toya’s is great. We rented it through Outdoorsy for nine days and we are having a great time. It has confirmed for Vicky and myself that a 35 foot fifth wheel is just what we want for our own. But renting is also somewhat frustrating.

For one thing, there are things I would change or customize with this unit and of course I can’t because it isn’t mine. Also, things break and you gotta fix them whether you own it or not. For instance, the overhead cabinets in the living room have glass inserts in the doors. These glass inserts are held in by a bead of silicone sealant. Well, several of the inserts have come loose and one fell out completely on Vicky the other day. So Lynn and I went to the local hardware store (a story in and of itself) to pick up a tube of sealant. I removed the door, reset the glass insert, and then put the door back on. Had it been my rig, I would have set the insert in more permanently.

Also, the Crossroads people mounted the stereo control system 18 inches off the floor. Are you kidding me? I’m 6’4”. I literally have to sit on the floor to see the controls of this thing. Also, when the TV source is HDMI, you cannot play the audio through the built in sound system. Not sure who engineered this, but they really need to go back to school. On the plus side, the Jensen TV is really good. It’s a 40” wide screen and when it has a good video source the picture is tack sharp. Really great for watching the Badgers lose to Illinois. Bah!

The dining area and TV. Note location of stereo control head.

The bed is really good. I may have mentioned that earlier. It’s a full size queen and fairly firm. I like it and sleep well on it. Also, the bedroom is exactly 6’4” high so I can stand up straight with my hair just brushing the ceiling. The shower is tight but serviceable now that we have a functioning shower head. This unit has a ton of storage space. Granted, we are renting it on a temporary basis and so are using only a portion of the storage capacity, but I am encouraged by the amount of space to tuck one’s stuff.

The nights have been cool and the furnace works well and runs for short periods of time. We also have the fake fireplace/heater which is quite effective at taking the chill off early in the morning. Vicky says that the refrigerator is good and “big enough” but I think she would like something bigger. She has turned out some exceptional meals and so the kitchen works really well. She is especially pleased with the counter space. We’ve both decided that if we didn’t have our sights set on something else, this Cruiser 305RS would suit us just fine.
