This time its for real

Updated: Jan 30, 2022

We pulled the trigger and bought ourselves a RV. As you will have learned from elsewhere on this site, its a Grand Design Reflection 337 and we love it. Only had it three weeks now, but we love it.

Today we are setting out t on our shakedown trip. We are heading out to Inks Lake State Park

in the Texas Hill Country for a week of RV camping - or glamping as Vicky calls it. The campsites have water and electric so we

should be able to test drive most if not all of the features of the rig. Vicky has been loading it up with food and basic necessitates for about a week now. We have our favorite pillows and standard bedding (its a king size mattress), a couple of throws for the cats to sleep on, a couple of table lamps to make the space homey and even a couple of sample curtains. We will be doing a lot of customization and "making it our own" over the next couple of months before we set out on our first big trip in May.

Well, that's it for now. I need to load up more stuff into the truck and then we take off in about two hours. See ya out there....

Inks Lake State Park

Driving the GD Reflection is pretty much like towing the Cruiser we rented a few years ago. The 337 is a bit longer and a bit heavier, but otherwise about the same. It tracks predictably with no sway or wobble. Lynn followed with Rhonda towing their Launch (27’ RV) and said that he saw nothing of concern.

Its about a one-hour trip from Round Rock to Inks Lake. The cats were good although Sampson yowled the entire trip. Ziva just hunkered down inside her new carrier and kept silent. We arrived around 2:00 pm and checked in with little fanfare. Out site was easy to find and we were able to back into it with a minimum of fuss. I wish I had gone deeper into our slot as there is not much room for the truck in front, but it’s too late now.

Setup was slow but not difficult. Somehow its different, this being our own trailer and not a rental.

We got the landing gear down onto blocks and lifted off the truck with ease. We were pretty much level side-to-side already. The auto leveling system worked as expected. It sure helps that we reset the zero point level back at the Heenan house. Then I showed Vicky how to hook up the electric and water lines. We put out the slides, pulled everything out of its travel storage and we were ready to glamp

The weather is cool but sunny today. Last night there was a glorious sunset. I took a few photos but was unable to do it justice. Inks Lake is a bustling park. There are people walking and driving everywhere. As I write this on Sunday morning, there are Canadian Geese swimming in the creek alongside out camping site. We are right on the lake and next to a creek.

The view out the side and back of our RV is stunning. This is exactly what we got this rig for. I am told that there are a lot of turtles in this lake but have not seen a one so far. We have the fireplace going - which both cats like - and had to turn the furnace up a bit as it got pretty cold last night. The cats romped around for a while last night, and their romping path seemed to always involve a trip over me. I think a cat stampede crossed over me at least half a dozen times. But, I'm glad they are acimating to the trailer and beginning to feel at home. Right now they are hidden away somewhere sleeping. (Why can't they sleep at night like the rest of us?)

Today we plan on taking a hike to the Valley Spring Creek Waterfall. It isn't much of a waterfall as waterfalls go, but it should make for some good photography. I will also get out and finally begin documenting our trailer, camp site and the surroundings. Then we plan on firing up the TV and watching the NFL Conference playoff games. The Packers, of course, bombed early so I am left to root for Kansas City or maybe Cincinatti. Go refs!
