Out and About near Aransas

Saturday - January 16, 2021

Nice country. We went for an extended drive with Rhonda and Lynn today. We went bird watching at the Aransas Wildlife preserve. Lots of birds there. First we went to the Big Tree. Yes, that is what it is called - The Big Tree. And it is a big tree. Not the biggest I've seen, but big nonetheless. Nearby the Large Conifer was a couple of large sea birds. Vicky and Rhonda were really thrilled.

Then we went to the preserve. Nobody can tell me what the difference is between a Sanctuary and a Preserve. Probably just semantics. Anyway, we drove around the preserve stopping to observe cranes and egrets, sea gulls and even an alligator. The gator stayed mostly underwater but kept eyeing us suspiciously. It was around lunch time.

Speaking of lunch, we stopped at a roadside stopping place and had a lunch of sandwiches, chips and trail mix. good stuff. Then we climbed to the top of the preserve observation tower where we observed even more sea birds and fishing boats. Once we got our breath back, we embarked on the Auto Tour which is about 16 miles long. Mostly we saw Mocking Birds - in fact that is all we saw on the auto tour. Each and every one of those birds mocked us as we drove past. It got tedious after a while.
