Just Hanging Out

Friday was a recuperation day from hiking at over 6,000 feet to peek into the windows of ancient Pueblo homes. So we hung around the camp site doing chores. I put up our flagpole – complete with flags – and conversing with family and friends who are staying in the campsite next to ours. It was a relaxing and fun day – just what a vacation is supposed to be about. I knocked out a few pages of the Jack Reacher novel I’m reading and worked on our new travel website. Vicky and her sister planned dinner which fell to Lynn to grill. I supervised.

Then yesterday, Saturday, was a surprise lay-about day. We had planned to go into Santa Fe and prowl around the plaza area but I managed to arrange for TV access to the Wisconsin Badger game – what a mistake that was – and so we ended up sitting around chatting, watching college football, drinking beer and having another relaxing vacation day.

One surprising thing I learned is that Santa Fe is at 7,000 feet elevation, which is 1,000 feet higher than the Bandelier National Monument. This has led me to theorize that high altitude makes you feel older. There are times when I end up huffing and puffing when I have barely exerted myself and I was thinking about how out of shape and old I am getting. Turns out it’s just the altitude.
