We delivered the Cruiser to the Toya’s, handed over the keys and headed home. We had a delightful vacation in our rented RV and I can only say that the transaction went smooth as glass. We had some minor glitches with the rig, which you can read about elsewhere in these blogs, but overall it was an outstanding experience. Most importantly, it provided Vicky and myself with just the information we need to make an educated decision when purchasing our own fifth wheel down the road. Garret and Monique Toya were amazing renters, providing us with lots of useful information, a fully functional and stocked (except for food) kitchen, a well cared for rig and most important of all, a welcoming attitude.
Since we could not meet with the Toya’s until after they got home from work, we spent the night in Bernalillo at the Holiday Inn. We hit the road shortly after dawn heading for Roswell. It has been far too long since I spoke with my alien friends. Roswell was a bigger city than I expected and a bit tamer than I expected. But they really do revel in their flying saucer connection. Aliens were everywhere, mostly little green men but some scary spidery things too. I mean depictions on signs and other advertising media of course.
We ate a fantastic lunch at Peppers bar and grill and then moved on to the UFO Museum and Research Center. I didn’t see a lot of research going on, but the museum is large, has a lot of exhibits, and an extensive timeline of the saucer crash incident. It even has an exhibit of my all-time favorite SciFi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still. An apparent full-size statue of Gort stands an a small stage and so I got to hang with him for a while. Most cool!
Roswell was soon in the rear view mirror and we set out across some of the dreariest land I have ever seen. It was extremely flat until it got flatter. There were a few cows trying to find something to munch on across those flat and desolate fields. There was some cotton growing and a few farmers harvesting their crop, but it was mostly kinda boring. Vicky and I used the time to talk about what we liked and what we didn’t like about the Cruiser and what we wanted to do with our future acquisition. As they say, planning is part of the journey.
Now we are tucked away in our room at the Embassy Suites in Lubbock watching the Houston Astros lose the second game of the world series to the Washington Nationals. Bah. Tomorrow we complete the last leg of the journey and return to the town where the rock is round. It’s been a gas so far!
