The Beech Point Campground in the Mississippi River State Park in Arkansas is one of the nicest places we have stayed so far. The full-hookup sites are well distributed around Bear Creek Lake with lots of room between them. We are in site six which backs up to the lake. The view out our large back window is gorgeous. There is plenty of wildlife to keep our indoor cats mesmerized (when they aren’t sleeping).
We arrived around mid afternoon and had to stop at the visitor’s center to register. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the visitors center itself is impressive. For a state park in the middle of nowhere in Arkansas, this is indeed impressive. We backed in with no trouble and found the site to be relatively level. We put single yellow “pads” below the port-side tires and easily leveled up. Connecting to the utilities was straightforward. We were parked and set up in 30 minutes. Next to the macadam pad is gravel, then a concrete slab with a picnic table and grill and another square of gravel for a tent, all of which is bordered by interlocking cement blocks. A built-in firepit completes the site.
The park has many trees of all types and sizes. One was directly behind this site but fell over at some time (nice for the view). Birds of all varieties are numerous. There were a pair of Canadian Geese rooting through the grass next to our site at one point and they made it plain to me that this was their park. I was not to disturb them.
It is mid spring here and the temperatures are cool and pleasant – currently 59 degrees and drizzly – so the foliage is still thickening. This is a good time to be here.
Today we plan to drive into Marianna – the local town – to pick up some supplies at the Ace Hardware and maybe some groceries. We also plan to hike around the campground a bit and take in the sights. There appears to be a beach across the spur of lake out our back window and it looks like a fine destination for a photo walk. Our neighbors have launched a boat and they took off on a fishing trip at 9:00 am today. Good luck to them.
